2010-2011 ART SYLLABUS
The primary objective of all art classes at BMS is simple: TO USE ART AS A MEANS OF DEVELOPING TWO LIFE SKILLS – ORGANIZATION & THE ABILITY TO FOLLOW A SET OF WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS. With these school-wide goals in mind, the class is intended to encourage students to explore their own abilities to “make art” using a variety of media while also examining some of the great artists of history and other cultures and learn more about how art fits into our daily lives. Content is on a rotating two year schedule to accommodate mixed 7th and 8th grade classes.
There is no textbook for this class. Students do need to have a 1” spiral binder notebook to keep in the art room plus a pencil, eraser, and fine point black Sharpie. This notebook is a major part of the organization goal. All papers handed out in class go into the notebook, including tests, project evaluations, notes, etc. Students have a tray in the classroom in which to keep their materials. The $3.00 art fee, payable to BMS, will cover all other supplies.
Grades are based on completed projects (50%), tests or written work (30%), and participation (20%). Artwork is criteria graded, which means students are graded more on their ability to follow the directions and guidelines than on their innate artistic talent. The participation portion of their grade includes prompt attendance, maintenance of materials and supplies, and cleanup, as well as cooperation and effort on projects. As participation hinges on being present in class, behavior that removes a student from class will affect the participation part of their grade. Tests are nearly always on the notes, and notebooks can be used for most tests. Good listening skills are expected!
If students are absent, they should check the class folder for papers they may have missed. Often the papers are put in their trays It is the student’s responsibility to get missing notes, etc. Right at the beginning of the period is NOT the time to get makeup work. The art room is available for make-up work during advisory on Wednesday and Thursday and after school on Wednesdays and Fridays.
display all art completed by students at various locations around the school and occasionally in downtown Baker. This artwork will be kept until the end of the quarter when we have a class-wide art show to vote for our favorite works. Please encourage your child to bring their artwork home at the end of the quarter. They create some marvelous works worthy of your appreciation. If they don’t bring it home and you want it, call shortly after the end of the quarter.
Making art with a group of students is a social, as well as creative, experience. I help students individually and encourage them to help each other when appropriate. Even though this is a class with a relaxed atmosphere, I will firmly maintain five simple rules. Students who cannot follow these rules will be asked to refocus, write sentences, spend time after school, or receive a referral.
1. Students are to give me their absolute attention during group instruction.
2. Students are not allowed to throw ANYTHING in art class.
3. Students are to use art supplies ONLY as directed and intended.
4. Students are to be positive and respectful in their conversations and actions toward one another and to the teacher.
5. Students are to remain in their seats unless directly involved in getting or putting away materials or cleanup.
The $3 art fee most paid at registration helps to cover the extensive amount of materials consumed in the art class, as well as provide funds for the maintenance and repair of major equipment. If you haven’t paid the art fee, checks can be made payable to BMS and given directly to Mrs. Rembold. A receipt will be issued.
If you have concerns or need to visit, I welcome emails to [email protected]. I find this the easiest method to communicate with parents. Your may also contact me on this website. Please use my email if you have any questions or concerns or just want to check on what’s happening in class. Please include your email on the opposite side if you wish email updates concerning the class. Grades are posted weekly on the PASS system. Check in the office to sign up for this service.

We can ALWAYS use the following in the art room: magazines with big pictures; yogurt containers, old shower curtains or plastic tablecloths, old photo calendars. If you have other items you think we might be able to use, call and ask!
Parents who might wish to help in the art room are welcome. Call or email me if interested.
Please sign below and return to me by the end of the first week of class. This is your student’s first assignment and worth 25 participation points.
I have read and agree to the guidelines for the 2010-2011 Baker Middle School ART class.
