MODERN ART: 4th Quarter
FINAL PROJECT - COMMERCIAL ARTIST FOR THE WEEK!
May 24-June 1
Project Directions
Students are assigned to design the graphics for one of five products (skateboard, water bottle, shoe, watch, or t-shirt) in the style of a modern artist - either Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, Piet Mondrian, or Pablo Picasso. Awards will be made to those designs chosen by our panel of judges as the best option for production. Students are encouraged to apply their knowledge and problem solve.

Chuck Close is a Pacific Northwest raised artist who has overcome a lifetime of learning disabilities, physical disabilities, and personal challenges to create photographic quality portraits using grids and a style called Photorealism. His artwork is actually thousands of miniature square paintings, which together form large colorful portraits.

Salvador Dali was a flamboyant Spanish artist who painted in the Surrealist style - realistic interpretations of dreams and visions. His art is marked with flaming giraffes and elephants with spindly legs, ants, crutch like props, and melting objects.

PIET MONDRIAN PROJECT - April 25 - 28

Notes on Mondrian
Dutch painter, Piet Mondrian, was an obsessive neurotic who demanded an orderly, neat world of horizontal and vertical lines. Most of his artwork is totally done in primary colors, black and white. Mondrian felt that subject matter took away from the beauty and simplicity of the pure line and color; therefore, remove the subject matter from the painting!

Our first project will involve Mother Nature and the Sun! Hopefully it will shine enough for our Solar Prints to be exposed! Art Projects are NEVER late unless they aren't turned in by the end of the quarter. The class may move on to a new project and students will want to use advisory, lunch, or after school time to complete projects. Written assignments will be given a specific due date. |

WEEK 6-8: WE'RE HEADING TO AFRICA! October 4-22Art Around the World is leaving the continent of Asia and moving around the globe to Africa for the next three weeks. We will be completing three projects: (Click on Project title for link to directions minus illustrations)
1. "Hands Across Africa" drawing and design mimicking the henna patterns used by Northern Africa Muslims. 2. Adinkra symbols from Ghana in a modified batik project. 3. Painting and decorating our own African mask Click HERE for a copy of the notes for the African Art Unit. Adinkra Symbol Illustrations (This site has far more than what is included in your notebook!) Sample projects from previous years Students will be given a Crossword Puzzle within the first week to be completed and due on October 22. |
ORIGAMI FROG OLYMPICS HELD IN THE ART ROOM!!!
The first ever Origami Frog Olympics were held on Thursday, September 30. Every table group made a color coordinated origami frog to enter in the two events: high jump and long jump.
FOURTH PERIOD: The Blue Frog, created by Austin, David, and Joe, was victorious in BOTH events. Blue Frog #4 ALSO had the best scores of all competitors throughout the day! High Jump: 9 1/2" Long Jump 30".
FIFTH PERIOD: Yellow Frog, created by Adina, Dominic, Orrin, Caleb, and Elyssa, won the Long Jump with a score of 29 1/2". Red Frog, also called Bobby and created by Mason, Shaun, Duane, and Hunter, won the high jump with a leap of 9 1/4".
PROBABLY THE MOST EXCITEMENT EVER FOR THE BOYS IN THE ART ROOM!!
